Reader ReDesign – Angele's Dining Room

I am at the One of a Kind media breakfast keeping track of all the fun stuff to tell you about tomorrow, but in the meantime…my first reader question!

My friend Angele and her husband, Scott (you can see pictures from their wedding here) recently bought a cute little 2 bedroom house.  It is definitely in need of some upgrades, but it has enormous potential! They are, slowly but surely, focusing on each room and making changes and it totally helps that Scott is handy!  They are stuck on the dining room though, so they asked me to help them.  Here is Angele’s email:

”I'm leaning towards a robin's egg blue on the walls. I'm not sure what to do with the chair rail, I think it's too much work to rip it off entirely so I'd like to work with it if possible. I don't know if I should paint a different color on the bottom or do a wallpaper treatment? I was toying with doing a damask wallpaper of some sort on the north wall, but who knows! I do have quite a few pictures and pieces of art but haven’t put anything up on the walls yet.”

They are also looking for a sideboard and pendant light.  And their table and chairs are new, so they needs to be used in the design concept.  Here are some pics of their dining room as it is now:

Great bones eh? I decided to come up with a couple of different mood boards.

moodboard_ModernGlam
For all three concepts, definitely keep the chair rail.  I am proposing you paint underneath it and put up the wallpaper on top.

Wallpaper – Oh Joy for Hygge and West - $125/roll
Paint – Palladian Blue by Benjamin Moore
Chandelier – Z Gallerie Glass Links Chandelier - $299
Sideboard – Ikea Torsby Sideboard - $369

moodboard_MidCenturyModern
Wallpaper – Ferm Living Little Leaves Grey - $85/roll
Paint – Robin’s Nest by Benjamin Moore
Pendant Lamp – CB2 Firefly Pendant - $229
Sideboard – GUFF Vintage Teak Buffet - $645

moodboard_AuNaturel
Stencil – Whitewall and Co. Round-A-Bout - $49.99
Paint – Chantilly Lace and Palladian Blue by Benjamin Moore
Pendant Lamp – West Elm Woven Veneer Pendant - $149
Console Table – CB2 Dwight Console - $199

Of course, Angele doesn’t have to use these sources and she can mix and match from all three concepts if she wants.

So, Angele, what do you think? What about the rest of you – which mood board do you like best for the dining room?

Nice job! I would absolutely go for the mid-century look. Love it. I could also be tempted by that zgallerie chandelier.

Oh my God Shannon you did such a great job! How in the world am I going to pick!? Overall I love #1 the most, but I'm in love with all the pendant lamps and that stencil! I'm going to show Scott the different looks and see what he says, I can't wait to get started! I'll be sure to send you some "after" pics! Now question, do I pain the chair rail white or the blue color?

Thank you so much! You should definitely by an interior decorator ;)

Great job, Shannon! You get total designer props for putting together 3 beautiful options! I love #3 the most, especially since it will go with the bright green in the adjacent room (if that's not being changed now). I like how the "au natural" light fixture comes with a navy background - it adds so much to the colour palette. Maybe a textured navy table runner or some navy accessories.

But wait, I also love option #1...super soft and inviting too. Wow, so many great choices here. Can't wait to see what the client chooses!

I like mood board #1 best - I'm a glam kinda girl :-)

I think another great option would be to install wainscoting under the chair rail. It's easy to do with strips of MDF, and would really give the room character. Adding crown moulding would be a nice touch too.

Option #1 for sure. I think it works best with their existing furniture. {Nice to finally meet you today!}

Love all three options! It would be very difficult to choose. Your friends are lucky to have you.

Scott votes #1, he loves the lamp! (that's impressive for a guy!) Cannot wait to start, first finishing the living room, hoping to start the dining room early December :)
It's so hard to paint with the pup running around!

Again a million thanks, you're so very talented xox

Angele, I'm so happy that you liked the different looks! And I'm so surprised that Scott liked #1! I thought he would totally steer clear of that style, but I was pleasantly surprised! Can't wait to see how it turns out!

I absolutely love the color pallet! I think my favorite mood board is the "modern glam." So gorgeous!

P.S. I think adding crown molding would make a really dramatic addition to the dining room!!
